गुरु, अथार्त वह महापुरुष, जो आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान एवं शिक्षा द्वारा अपने शिष्यों का मार्गदर्शन करते हैं। हिन्दु धर्म के कुछ महत्वपूर्ण गुरुओं में श्री आदि शंकराचार्य, श्री रामानुज आचार्य तथा श्री माधवाचार्य उल्लेखनीय हैं। गुरु पूर्णिमा को बौद्धों द्वारा गौतम बुद्ध के सम्मान में भी मनाया जाता है। बौद्ध धर्म के अनुयायियों का मानना है कि, गुरु पूर्णिमा के दिन ही गौतम बुद्ध ने भारतीय राज्य उत्तर प्रदेश के सारनाथ नामक स्थान पर अपना प्रथम उपदेश दिया था। इस दिन कृष्ण द्वैपायन वेदव्यास का प्राकट्य हुआ। चतुर्वेदों को संहिताबद्व करने के कारण उनका नाम कृष्णद्वैपादन वेदव्यास पड़ा।
उन्होनें चतुर्वेदों के अतिरिक्त 18 पुराणों, उपपुराणों, महाभारत, व्यास संहिता आदि ग्रंन्थों का प्रणयन किया। वेद व्यास जी को जगत गुरू भी कहते है। वेद व्यास जी के पिता ऋषि पराशर और माता सत्यवती थी। इस दिन वेद व्यास, शंकराचार्य , ब्रहमा जी का विशेश पूजा किया जाता है। स्नान और पूजा आदि से निवृत्त होकर उत्तम वस्त्र धारण करके गुरू को वस्त्र, फल, फूल, माला व दक्षिणा अर्पण कर उनका आशीर्वाद प्राप्त करना चाहिए। गुरू का आशीर्वाद ही प्राणी मात्र के लिए कल्याणकारी व मंगल करने वाला होता है। यह गुरू की कृपा प्राप्त करने का विशिष्ट अवसर है। यह पर्व वैष्णव, शैव, शक्ति आदि सभी सम्प्रदायों में श्रद्वा-पूर्वक एवं उत्साह के साथ मनाया जाता है।
