भारत और ऑस्ट्रेलिया के बीच टेस्ट सीरीज का बॉक्सिंग डे टेस्ट का पहला दिन टीम इंडिया के बल्लेबाजों के लिए शानदार रहा. विराट कोहली इस मैच में सलामी बल्लेबाजों की नई जोड़ी के साथ उतरे थे जिसने अपना काम बखूबी किया. टीम इंडिया का पहला विकेट 19वें ओवर में और दूसरा चाय के ठीक पहले गिरा. इस मैच में मयंक अग्रवाल ने अपने डेब्यू टेस्ट में हाफ सेंचुरी लगाई तो चेतेश्वर पुजारा भी फिफ्टी लगाकर पर्थ टेस्ट में अपना खोया फॉर्म वापस हासिल करने में कामयाब रहे. 
पुजारा ने अपने टेस्ट करियर की 21वीं फिफ्टी लगाई. पुजारा ने धैर्य के साथ बल्लेबाजी करते हुए 152 गेंदों पर अपने 50 रन पूरे किए. पारी के 71वें ओवर में पुजारा ने मिचेल स्टार्क की गेंद पर एक रन लेकर अपनी हाफ सेंचुरी पूरी की. पुजारा की इस सीरीज की यह दूसरी फिफ्टी है. वहीं वे एडिलेड की पहली पारी में शानदार शतक लगाया था जिसकी वजह से टीम इंडिया एडिलेड टेस्ट में ऐतिहासिक जीत हासिल कर सकी थी.
एडिलेड में एक सेंचुरी और एक हाफ सेंचुरी लगाने के बाद पुजारा पर्थ टेस्ट में केवल 24 और 4 रनों की पारी खेल पाए थे. इस मैच में पुजारा दोनों ही पारियों में तेज गेंदों पर विकेट के पीछे लपके गए थे. मेलबर्न में पुजारा ने अपने ही अंदाज में बल्लेबाजी की और रन बनाने के लिए पूरा समय लिया और मौका देखकर चौके लागने से भी गुरेज नहीं किया.
पुजारा की पारी की मदद से टीम इंडिया का लंच तक स्कोर 57 रन पर था उस समय पुजारा ने केवल 10 रन बनाए थे. तब दूसरे छोर पर मयंक अग्रवाल रन बना रहे थे. दूसरे सत्र में मयंक ने अपनी हाफ सेंचुरी तो पूरी की लेकिन चाय से ठीक पहले अपना विकेट गंवा बैठे. वहीं पुजारा अपनी पारी धीरे धीरे मजबूत करते रहे.
चाय पर टीम का स्कोर 123 रन था तो वहीं पुजारा 102 गेंद खेलकर केवल 33 रन बना पाए थे. तीसरे सत्र में कप्तान विराट कोहली ने आते ही तेजी से रन बनाने शुरू किए लेकिन पुजारा अपने अंदाज में ही खेलते रहे. विराट की तेज पारी के बीज पुजारा ने अपनी हाफ सेंचुरी पूरी कर डाली. इसके बाद भी पुजारा मजबूती से डटे नजर आए. पुजारा की वापसी टीम इंडिया के मनोबल को बढ़ाने वाली है वहीं ऑस्ट्रेलिया के लिए दिन निराशा भरा ही रहा क्योंकि कई बार उनके गेंदबाज विकेट लेने से चूक गए.
