तो किस्सा कुछ यूं है कि इस फिल्म को राजकुमार संतोषी (Rajkumar Santoshi) ने डायरेक्ट कर रहे थे और धर्मेंद्र (Dharmendra) प्रोड्यूसर करने वाले थे। फिल्म में सनी देओल के साथ मीनाक्षी शेषाद्री और रवीना टंडन (Raveena Tandon) को कास्ट किया जाना था। लेकिन बाद में किसी ने अच्छी डील दी और यह फिल्म सनी देओल के हाथ से निकल गई।
कौन सी थी ये फिल्म?
राजकुमार संतोषी 1990/1991 में सनी देओल (Sunny Deol), मीनाक्षी शेषाद्रि और रवीना टंडन के साथ ‘अजय’ (Ajay) नाम की फिल्म बनाने वाले थे। इसका संगीत बप्पी लाहिरी ने दिया था और इसे धर्मेंद्र ने प्रोड्यूस किया था। संतोषी और मीनाक्षी के बीच कुछ दिक्कतें थीं, इसलिए संतोषी ने फिल्म को रोक दिया।
1997 में बोनी कपूर ने संतोषी को अनिल कपूर (Anil Kapoor), माधुरी दीक्षित (Madhuri Dixit) और नम्रता शिरोडकर के साथ ‘अजय’ बनाने का एक अच्छा फ़ाइनेंशियल ऑफर दिया। इस प्रोजेक्ट के लिए ‘पुकार’ (Pukar) नाम चुना गया। इससे सनी देओल नाराज हो गए क्योंकि स्क्रिप्ट असल में उनका आइडिया था और सनी अनिल कपूर को पसंद नहीं करते थे।

पुकार 17 करोड़ रुपये के बजट के साथ बनी थी और बॉक्स ऑफिस (Box Office) पर फ्लॉप साबित हुई थी। फिल्म ने इंडिया ग्रॉस 21 करोड़ और वर्ल्डवाइड 25.07 करोड़ रुपये की कमाई की थी।
राजकुमार संतोषी की 2000 में आई फिल्म ‘पुकार’ को भारतीय सिनेमा के फैंस के बीच एक ‘कल्ट क्लासिक’ (Cult Classic) माना जाता है। भले ही यह बॉक्स ऑफिस पर कमर्शियल तौर पर फ्लॉप रही हो, लेकिन अनिल कपूर की नेशनल अवॉर्ड जीतने वाली एक्टिंग, माधुरी दीक्षित के शानदार डांस, ए.आर. रहमान के यादगार म्यूजिक और इसकी जबरदस्त, एक्शन से भरपूर कहानी के लिए इसे काफी सराहा जाता है।
