चमोली जिले के कर्णप्रयाग में निहंग सिखों और स्थानीय लोगों के विवाद के बाद बृहस्पतिवार को निहंग सिखों का जत्था कुल्हाल बैरियर तोड़कर उत्तराखंड की सीमा में घुस गया। इनमें से कई देर रात देहरादून के धर्मावाला की ओर बढ़ रहे थे, कुछ निहंग तलवारें लहराकर जत्थे का नेतृत्व कर रहे थे, इन्हें रोकने के लिए पूरे जिले की पुलिस और अन्य फोर्स मौके पर तैनात थी। लेकिन रात एक बजे तक वह प्रेमनगर नहीं पहुंचे थे, उनकी लोकेशन पुलिस को भी नही पता थी। हालांकि अब मिली जानकारी के अनुसार देर रात सभी लोगों को वापस पांवटा साहिब की तरफ़ भेज दिया गया

इसके बाद ये निहंग बैरिकेडिंग तोड़कर आगे बढ़ गए। मौके पर तैनात पुलिस और आईटीबीपी के सामने ही तलवारें लहराते हुए वह देहरादून-पांवटा राजमार्ग की ओर जाने लगे। इस दौरान उन्हें रोकने के लिए पुलिस की ओर से खड़े किए गए दो डंपरों में भी उन्होंने तोड़फोड़ कर दी।
निहंगों के उत्तराखंड की सीमा में घुसने की सूचना पर शासन-प्रशासन ने जिलेेभर से पुलिस और अन्य बलों को मौके के लिए रवाना कर दिया। निहंग हेमकुंड साहिब जाने की बात पर अड़े हुए थे।
